Product Description & Reviews
International performing artist Paul Vondiziano celebrates the work of significant guitar composers from around the Mediterranean. This crisp recording and accomplished performance is rare treat for guitar cogniscenti. A perfect CD for quiet contemplation or your next dinner party.
Track 1. Suite in D (13:29). Gaspar Sanz (1640-1710). A delicate and spritely 17th c. dance suite expertly arranged for modern guitar. Spanish guitarist and pedagogue Sanz inspired many later composers and helped set the foundation of flamenco rhythms.
Tracks 2-9. Epitafios (25:30). Mikis Theodorakis (b. 1925). A song cycle of the poetry of Yiannis Ritsos by politically active Greek composer Theodorakis. Arranged by Vondiziano, the heartfelt emotions and atmosphere convey a Mediterranean pace of life.
Tracks 10-13. Koyunbaba (14:23). Carlo Domeniconi (b. 1947). A spellbinding reflection on the Turkish region Koyunbaba, this 1985 work is filled with rich harmonies and atmospheric textures. The most musically challenging of the three pieces and well worth the effort.
